ANGLE MOUNTED CLOSET RODS

What do you do when the walls are at an angle?

45-degree-mount

Mounting a closet rod in a room that has one or more diagonal walls isn’t difficult but does take a little more planning and time to complete.

Follow these instructions to learn how it’s done!

The first step in the process is to make the support that the mounting flanges will attach to. This support will be cut so that a flat surface, perpendicular to the floor, will be created. Begin with a block of wood. A piece of 2×4 cut to a square for instance.

Be sure to make the cut clean and smooth. If necessary sand the surface so it can be painted the same color as the wall. Finish by installing the flange to the finished block and putting the closet rod in place.

CLOSET ROD PERFORMANCE

How many pounds will your closet rod support from the center before it curves or sags 1 inch?
Graphic showing 1 inch rod sag

Note: Failure of an installation is much more likely to occur when the rod mounting flanges are not secured correctly to the wall and not with the closet rod itself.

In other words, the mounts are more likely to rip from the wall before the rod bends or breaks beyond repair.

6 FOOT ROD WEIGHT CAPACITIES:
Aluminum Anodized Oval: Up to 45 lbs.
Steel Polished Chrome Oval: Up to 50lbs.
Aluminum Anodized Round 1-1/16”: Up to 55 lbs.
Aluminum Anodized Signature”: Up to 65 lbs.
Aluminum Anodized Round 1-5/16”: Up to 75 lbs.
Aluminum Anodized Elite 1-5/16”: Up to 80 lbs.
Stainless Steel 1-1/16”: Up to 95 lbs.
Steel Polished Chrome Round 1-1/16”: Up to 110 lbs.
Steel Polished Chrome Round 1-5/16”: Up to 170 lbs.

Keep in mind that this list doesn’t represent a real world application. You wouldn’t  hang all of your clothing in the very center of your closet rod, they’ll be spread out over the entire span of the rod.

Also, your closet rod may not be exactly 6 feet in length. The shorter the rod, the more weight it can hold before sagging, and the longer the rod, the less weight it will hold before sagging.

Sagging can be prevented by using a center support or a support bracket.

Note that the Steel Products will spring back after sagging, where the aluminum will not.

SHOULD I USE A ROD SUPPORT?
Oval Rods over 4 feet long should use a Center Support or a rod & Shelf Support
Round 1-1/16” Diameter Rods over 5 feet long should use a Center Support or a rod & Shelf Support.
Round 1-5/16” Diameter Rods over 6 feet long should use a Center Support or a rod & Shelf Support.

THE 32MM CLOSET SYSTEM

You may have wondered why some of the closets you’ve seen have small holes running vertically up and down the panels.

These closet systems are commonly called 32mm systems, or European systems, because the pre-drilled holes are placed 32mm apart.

These pre-drilled holes make it possible for you to easily assemble your closet systems the way that you like.

For instance, if you don’t like the height where you inserted the pin or flange, just take it out and move it up or down to another hole.

For closet rod, Hardware decor sells 32mm flanges which typically include screws, although you don’t necessarily need them since the 5mm pins on the back fit perfectly into the panel holes.

For shelving, Hardware decor sells low profile shelf support pins that insert perfectly into the 32mm holes on the side panel, all you have to do is put four of the pins into the panel and then put your shelf right on top of those pins.

32mm systems make it easy to put up and move shelves where you want them.

You can see how the 32mm system makes installation quick and easy considering there are no holes to drill, just plug the flanges or pins into the holes and you’re all set.

Hardware decor sells a variety of 32mm products so that installation takes just a few seconds.

Check out our selection of 32mm products and find the right fit for your closet design.

HOW MUCH DOES CLOTHING WEIGH?

So how much do your clothes weigh anyway?

It depends. Are you a big person or a little person? Do you have light-weight warm climate clothing or heavy cold weather clothing? Do you own a lot of suits?

You may want to grab a sample of your wardrobe, as many as will hang in a 1 foot space perhaps, and weight it. By multiplying this number you should get a pretty good idea of how much weight you’ll need to support.

Generally speaking…

jeans : 1.5 pounds
shirts: 0.5 pounds
suits: 4.0 pounds

WHICH CLOSET ROD IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

When purchasing your closet rod, you may have a couple of questions about which rod is the right fit for your application.

Whatever your choice, you can be sure that all of Hardware Decor’s closet rods are durable, built to last, and will support more weight than a traditional wooden rod. Because they all have a high performance level, you can choose your rod based on style and finish without worrying about performance.

The strength of the closet rod is determined by the material it’s made from, the wall thickness, and the diameter of the tube.

When looking at a cross section of the tube, the diameter is the distance from one side to the other. The larger the diameter, the stronger the rod. The thicker the tube wall, the stronger the rod will be.

Strength:
HARDWARE DECOR offers closet rods constructed of three different materials: steel, stainless steel and aluminum.

Closet rods made from steel are chrome plated. In addition to being the strongest, they are also very resilient. Even after being overloaded they are likely to spring back to their original shape due to the resilient quality of steel.

Stainless Steel is the next strongest material. While performing similarly to regular steel, stainless steel has the added benefit of corrosion resistance. Stainless steel is an excellent option for humid or damp environments like laundry rooms and locker rooms.

Aluminum rods have a similar weight bearing capacity to steel, but being made of aluminum they are more rigid and less resilient than steel. Aluminum is the lightest of all three metals.

While it is a very strong material it is less likely to spring back to shape after it’s been severely overloaded. A
luminum has the added benefit of coming in a variety of curable colored finishes due to it ability to be anodized.

THE VERSA-LIFT

The Versa-Lift mini is a specialty, single arm wardrobe lift, that rear mounts to the wall, making it ideal for narrow spaces. This compact lift has 8 loops positioned for hanging garments forward facing. It’s perfect for compact spaces like entryways, mudrooms, and laundry rooms, but is also convenient for use in high closets to hold garments you may not use often, or to make space in the rest of your closet.

When installing Versa-Lift Mini to drywall, it should be positioned and mounted to an interior wall stud if at all possible. Otherwise, install with high capacity wall anchors. Available in Black or Silver.

The Versa-Lift Mid is also a single arm lift for rear mounting applications, and is suited to areas with limited width. This lift is also compact and great for smaller areas. This rod does not contain the 8 loops as the mini, it features a clothes rod. This is another great wardrobe lift for laundry rooms or mudrooms.

NOVARA CLOSET ROD HARDWARE

The Novara line of closet rod hardware offers a sleek and contemporary way to install your closet rod beneath shelving. The mounting flanges, center supports, and corner pieces give a clean and modern look to your closet. By using a screw that passes through the supporting shelf and into the mounting pieces the installation has no visible screws. Novara is one of the top choices for interior designers and professional closet builders.

These products were designed differently than other closet rod systems because they mount to the underside of your closet shelf, a feature that is helpful when mounting your rod to a wall isn’t an option. Additionally, the Novara corner rods kits give you the ability to wrap your closet rod around both the inside and outside corners of your closet. This is a practical installation that allows you to utilize corner spaces that would normally be wasted.

The flange and center support are identical in appearance, except that the flange is closed on one side to prevent the closet rod from passing through and the center support is completely open. The flange and center support both have a standard drop down dimension and leave plenty of room for hooking hangers.

Novara corner pieces are made for the standard 15x30mm oval closet rod and all of the flanges and center supports will work with any standard oval rods giving you more possibilities for your closet rod installation.

Novara flanges give visual continuity and allow you to use all of your space for hanging your clothing.  Another great way to utilize the Novara line is in an armoire where the cabinet may be too shallow to hang your clothing on a traditional, horizontal closet rod.

Novara products are also great for laundry rooms, mudrooms, or storage rooms. With all the versatility of these products, we’re sure you’ll find the perfect space for these elegant Novara closet systems.
